Right, let me tell you about this amazing walk you can do straight from Hotel Alberello – Monte Brione. It’s a hidden gem!
Now, Monte Brione is basically this incredible natural wonderland with a fascinating history tied to Lake Garda Trentino. Get this: until 1918, this whole area was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and they decided to build a strategic defence line right here. So, as you wander along the Peace Trail, you’ll spot these imposing Austrian forts – it’s like stepping back in time!
But Brione isn’t just about history; it’s also a haven for wildlife. It’s actually a designated ‘Site of Community Importance’ and part of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas. They’ve found over 500 plant species here! It’s a botanist’s dream, with wild orchids, ancient holm oaks, and fragrant brooms – loads of them are rare or even unique to this area.
A “monadnock” with lake views
Okay, a bit of geography for you: Monte Brione is this limestone and marl peak that rises up from the Sarca alluvial plain, separating Riva del Garda from Torbole. It’s got this distinctive shape, like a slice of orange, so you can’t miss it. And though it’s not a massive mountain, the views of the lake and surrounding mountains are absolutely stunning.
The Peace Trail and those Austrian forts
Ready for an adventure? Our hike starts from Porto San Nicolò in Riva del Garda. From there, we’ll take the Peace Trail, a path that winds along the ridge of the mountain, with amazing views and glimpses into the area’s history.
Along the way, we’ll come across two super interesting forts:
- Forte Garda: Built between 1898 and 1900, Forte Garda is a classic example of a third-generation mountain fort. Made of squared stone and concrete, it could house up to 150 men. In 1915, they added this long tunnel with observation points on the sheer face of Brione to keep an eye on the Nago area and the mouth of the Sarca River.
- Batteria di Mezzo: This fortification, built between 1904 and 1907, is a fourth-generation armoured fort. Made of reinforced concrete, it was camouflaged with the terrain and could hold up to 200 men. It also has a long tunnel with stairways and observation points, giving it a strategic view over Lake Garda.
